Hollerin' contest to roar back with new organizers

A revamped hollering competition hopes to roar back this fall, but in a Cumberland County venue. Robby Goodman, a 48-year-old past contestant and winner of the famed but erstwhile National Hollerin' Contest in Spivey's Corner, is planning to stage a similar competition in October at Paradise Acres, a private, 12-acre special-event campus south of Hope Mills.

What started as a project for graduate school quickly turned into a passion for Liv Dubendorf and Brian Gersten. Dubendorf and Gersten are both graduate students at Wake Forest University. For a class assignment, the pair began to research and study the ancient art of hollerin’ and the National Hollerin’ Contest held annually in Spivey’s Corner.
